Biography

I am Jani Luoma (b. 1997), a visual artist based in Helsinki. I graduated with a Master’s degree in Fine Arts from the Academy of Fine Arts, Helsinki in 2025. My works are primarily different forms of moving image. I want to think that my way of working is materialistic in a way that it reveals the subjectivity of filming and means of production. Lately I have focused a lot on how to look at animals, tourism, plants as raw materials with connections to global trade, and European industrialization. Through addressing local, Finnish and Nordic, subjects and issues in my works, I hope to open up a broader discussion about national identity, whiteness and working class. In 2027, I will be participating in Villa Karo Residency in Benin and Väinö Tanner Foundation Residency in Mazzano Romano in Italy.

My artistic practice has been supported by Amos Andersson’s Fond, Swedish Cultural Foundation in Finland, the Finnish-Swedish Cultural Foundation, Eugène, Elisabeth and Birgit Nygrén Foundation, Greta and Alfred Runeberg Foundation, and University of the Arts Helsinki Foundation. I have participated in artist residencies in Iceland, Sweden, Germany, and Finland.
