Biography
Jani Luoma (b. 1997) is an artist based in Helsinki, Finland, currently completing his MFA at the Academy of Fine Arts Helsinki, specializing in Time and Space. Luoma's artistic practice uses diary-like notes on odd and fluid events as a means of creating structures and sourcing material for his works. His work often takes the form of videos, performances, and installations, through which he power relations from a personal perspective, and challenges the subjectivity of moving image practices using fragmented storytelling and material variation. Focusing on lens-based media and performance, Luoma has exhibited his works in Helsinki and Stockholm in venues such as the Ateneum Art Museum, Asbestos Art Space, Kuva/Tila Gallery, Vapaan Taiteen Tila, Havet Gallery in Konstfack, and Utomhusgalleriet På Sergels torg. He has also carried out performances and screenings in public spaces and at collective events, including screenings at Kino Club in Helsinki and New Cinema Zvezda in Belgrade. Luoma has received grants from Konstsamfundet, the Swedish-Finnish Cultural Foundation, the Swedish Cultural Foundation in Finland, and the University of the Arts Helsinki Foundation.
