JANI LUOMA

Biography

Jani Luoma (b. 1997) is an artist based in Helsinki, Finland, currently completing his MFA at the Academy of Fine Arts Helsinki, specializing in Time and Space.

Luoma's artistic process begins with diary notes and conversations, which evolve into ideas for videos, texts, and performances. As material for his work, Luoma uses mundane video clips, audio recordings, and intimate stories about relationships. By categorizing and rearranging these fragments, he creates works that deconstruct the norms of sexuality and gender roles. In his works, Luoma reveals the materialistic means of production, and uses their remnants as a foundation for imagining new worlds.

Besides Luoma’s individual artistic practice, he also collaborates with Veera Wahlroos as part of a performance duo. Together, they are currently preparing their third public performance, ”Touch”, at Taidekoti Kirpilä in June 2025. Their performance explores intimacy in friendship through haptic, sensory-based touch. In their collaborative work, they actively establish and negotiate boundaries both verbally and through physical gestures.

Focusing on moving image, performance and text, Luoma has exhibited his works in Finland and Sweden in venues such as the Ateneum Art Museum, Gallery Rajatila, Asbestos Art Space, Kuva/Tila Gallery, Vapaan Taiteen Tila, Havet Gallery at Konstfack, and Utomhusgalleriet På Sergels torg. He has also carried out performances and screenings in public spaces and at collective events, including screenings at Kino Club in Helsinki and New Cinema Zvezda in Belgrade. He is a member of the Performance Artists Unite! community, which organizes performance events in Helsinki. Luoma has received grants from Konstsamfundet, the Swedish-Finnish Cultural Foundation, the Swedish Cultural Foundation in Finland, Eugène, Elisabeth och Birgit Nygréns stiftelse, and Greta och Alfred Runebergs Stiftelse.
